If you need help to sleep, you’re not alone. Nearly a third of UK adults suffer from insomnia. Left untreated, this can lead to a real drop in wellbeing and ongoing health problems. Luckily, aromatherapy is a highly effective and natural way to sleep soundly again, through the use of relaxing essential oils and pillow spray
Why essential oils?
Essential oils have been used for over 3,500 years, since the Egyptians first recorded the use of aromatics in religious ceremonies to honour their gods. This practice became a foundation of natural health and medicines that are still used today across the world.
What makes essential oils so special?
Essential oils are the ‘essence’ of a plant or flower, which is extracted through a distillation process to retain the beneficial properties. They are naturally occurring, volatile and active, meaning that they rapidly switch to gas from a liquid state when released – allowing you to rapidly experience the beautiful fragrance and well being benefits of the oil you are using. To date, over 3,000 of these volatile, aromatic compounds have been discovered, each with specific and unique benefits. These oils can be used individually or in beautiful blends.
Calming essential oils
Essential oils all have their distinct properties which can help to encourage certain mental and physical states. For example, some of the most calming and calming essential oils are Rose, Ylang Ylang, Valerian, Hop, Eucalyptus and Frankincense.
Essential oils that help with sleep
Some essential oils are also incredibly calming and known to help aid sleep. Two of these with particularly beneficial properties are lavender and bergamot. These are both rich in linalyl acetate and linalool, two naturally occurring compounds that promote relaxation. Lavender is a fragrance that many of us have grown up with, and bergamot has powerful emotional balancing properties, alongside its ability to aid sleep.
Using a sleep pillow spray
When you inhale the fragrance of these two oils, your body will respond by relaxing and beginning to wind down. One of the best ways to use them at bedtime is through a sleep spray. Simply apply a delicate mist of our lavender pillow spray to your pillow and relax as you inhale the precious oils. You can also spray the pillow spray into your dresser, so that your nightclothes are scented with the relaxing fragrances.
Other tactics to try
As well as using your pillow spray, you can greatly help to improve your quality of sleep by adopting good sleep habits. Leave digital technology at the door and switch off all screens and devices at least one hour before bedtime. Avoid caffeine after 3pm and have a warm bath before bed, ideally with a relaxing aromatherapy-based blend (the Relax bath salts are ideal ).
Enjoy a cup of chamomile tea and make sure your room is cool and completely dark. A silk sleep mask will help to keep out distracting light. Keep a notebook by your bed so that you can jot down any remaining thoughts which might otherwise run around your head, and snuggle up with a good book as you enjoy the soothing fragrance of our pillow spray, and begin to drift…
